David "The 'Stache!" Weprin is two days from becoming the biggest political failure in recent memory. And he can thank who he likes to call "The President of my party".
Public Policy Polling, described by Politico's David Catanese as a "Democratic firm" has driven home the latest nail in the coffin for Team "'Stache!" with the second poll in 3 days where Bob Turner leads them by 6 points - and the news is all about the "Obama Anchor". From Public Policy Polling:
If Turner wins on Tuesday it will be largely due to the incredible unpopularity of Barack Obama dragging his party down in the district. Obama won 55% there in 2008 but now has a staggeringly bad 31% approval rating, with 56% of voters disapproving of him. It's a given that Republicans don't like him but more shocking are his 16% approval rating with independents and the fact that he's below 50% even with Democrats at 46% approving and 38% disapproving.
An offspring of this Obama Anchor in NY-9 is the feeling that the US-Israel relationship has been hurt under the President's "leadership.
Turner is in fact winning the Jewish vote by a 56-39 margin, very unusual for a Republican candidate. This seems to be rooted in deep unhappiness with Obama on this issue- only 30% of voters overall approve of how he's handling Israel to 54% who disapprove and with Jewish voters his approval on Israel is 22% with 68 of voters disapproving. That has a lot to do with why Turner's in such a strong position.
Beyond Obama's weakness, Turner has actually proven to be a pretty strong candidate. 45% of voters rate him favorably to 30% with a negative opinion. Independents give him good marks by a 56/17 spread and he has better than normal numbers across party lines with 29% of Democrats expressing a positive view of him to just 43% with an unfavorable one.
The Siena and PPP polls make it official - Team Turner has defeated Team "'Stache!" in the campaign. They controlled the narrative, putting forth ideas and positions to be discussed and scrutinized. Team "'Stache!" didn't do that. they've been responsive to Team Turner, using scare tactics and liberal "buzz words" without putting forth substance - that is, when they haven't been screwing things up to such an huge degree.
Team Turner has accomplished what it needed to do to put Bob Turner in a position to win - something that most Dems thought to be unthinkable. He's been the candidate of common sense, the candidate of independent thought, the candidate with the tools needed to fix things, the candidate who understands the district.
Two days from now, we'll see if he is the winning candidate.
